Yolanda Saldívar, the woman who was sentenced to life in prison for murdering Tejano superstar Selena was denied parole
On Thursday, the Texas Board of Pardons and Paroles issued a press release announcing that a three-person parole panel determined after "thorough consideration" that Saldívar should not be granted release on parole due to the nature of the offense. In 1995, she was convicted on the charge of murder with a deadly weapon.
Saldívar, 64, was the manager of Selena Etc. and the founder and president of her fan club when she gunned down the 23-year-old Grammy Award-winning singer at a Days Inn in Corpus Christi, Texas on March 31, 1995 after being fired for forging checks and embezzling more than $30,000 from the star’s fan club and boutiques.
In October 1995, Saldívar was convicted and sentenced to life with the possibility of parole in 30 years.
Saldívar has maintained her innocence, that the shooting was accidental, and that Selena’s superstardom influenced her harsh sentencing.
The panel's decision was based on her parole review file, which included confidential interviews, court documents, criminal history, information both in support and protest of her parole, "institutional adjustment" and a statement provided by Saldívar.
Saldívar case will be reviewed again within the next five years.
