In December 2023, his family first noticed unusual symptoms, such as confusion and balance issues, during a family bowling night, which led to medical evaluations and the discovery of a brain tumor. Following his diagnosis, Bolton underwent emergency surgery to remove the tumor at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center.
A second surgery was necessary in January 2024 due to complications from an infection. He completed radiation and chemotherapy treatments by October 2024 and now undergoes bi-monthly MRIs to monitor for recurrence, which is common with glioblastoma.
The treatments have impacted his short-term memory, speech, and mobility. Despite these challenges, Bolton remains optimistic and continues to focus on his recovery, supported by his three daughters and six grandchildren . He has chosen not to receive a specific prognosis to maintain a positive outlook.
In his first public interview about his condition, Bolton shared that he finds strength in daily meditation, voice therapy, and spending quality time with his family. He expressed a renewed appreciation for life and a desire to continue creating music, even mentioning a new song title inspired by his journey: "Ain’t Going Down Without a Fight".
As of his latest update, Bolton's April 2025 MRI scan showed no signs of tumor recurrence, and he continues to focus on his health and future creative projects.
